Gerund adalah bentuk kata kerja yang karena kasus tertentu harus ditambah -ing
Berikut merupakan kondisi yang mengharuskan penggunaan gerund:

1. Verb sebagai Subject
     Contoh: Singing makes me happy.
                   Exercising regularly makes our body healthy.

2. Verb sebagai Object/complement
    Contoh:  Popi likes shopping.
                   My hobby is cooking.

3. Verb sebagai prepositional object (kata kerja terletak setelah kata depan)
    Contoh: I'm sorry for disturbing you.
                  On opening the door, I found him lying on the floor.

4.  Setelah Conjunction/kata hubung
     Contoh: Before becoming a president, Susilo was an army.
                   Bella refused to meet Edward although missing him so much.

5. Setelah possesive adjective
    Contoh: I'm annoyed about Yusi's forgeting to pay.
                  Her teaching is fascinating

6.  Setelah istilah khusus
     a. no use (tiada guna)
     b. to be worth (bermanfaat)
     c. to be busy (sibuk)
     d. can't help/can't bear (tidak bisa menahan)

7.  Setelah verb tertentu

     admit      appreciate     avoid      advise      claim        consider    contemplate

     delay      deny              detest      dislike      escape      endure      excuse 

     face        feel like         finish      forgive     give up     imagine    involve   

     miss       mention         mind       resume     risk           resist         prefer

     practice  suggest          report      regret       recall        resent        quit

     etc.
    Contoh: Jacob admitted stealing the money
                  Would you mind helping me?

8.  Setelah verb/adjective tertentuyang selalu dirangkai dengan 'to' namun harus diikuti gerund.
     advance to               get used to                      object to

     confess to                to be used to                   look forward to

     devote to                 to be accustomed to        key to

     dedicate to              to be opposed to

     Contoh: Ahmad confessed to stealing the jewels
                   I am used to eating gudeg.

Content Words dan Function Words

1. Content words is words that are usually stressed in a sentence, higher in pitch, and usually longer in duration.

Yang termasuk content words :

a. A noun ( person, place, or thing)

    example : Bella and Edward at the restaurant

b. A verb ( kata kerja)

    example : She went to Bandung

c. An adverb ( kata keterangan)

    example : He'll be here soon

d. An adjective ( kata sifat)

    example : Ahmad is a diligent student

2. Function words is words that are not usually stressed in a sentence, lower in pitch, and often very quick.

Yang termasuk function words:

a. Articles (A and The)

    example: They will play in the park

b. Auxiliary verbs ( to be, to do, to have, modals)

    example: he was a quiet man

c. Preposition (kata depan)

    example: I put the book on the table

d. Conjunction (kata hubung)

    example: You and I will go to Hawaii

e. Pronoun ( kata ganti) 

    example:  Marry comes to the college with him.
